Episode # 91 Themed Casinos or Not?

Part I:    Winning and Losing

a. There is a lot of luck often when it comes to winning and losing and Mark Clark of South Rockwood, Michigan must be a candidate for one of the “luckiest” gamblers of all time. (from CNN) — When most can’t manage to get a $20 return on a scratch off, one Michigan man walked away with $4 million … TWICE!! “You don’t think you’ll win millions once, and you definitely never think it would happen twice,” said Mark Clark, of South Rockwood, Michigan, after his latest win this month.

Three years ago, Mark delivered fuel to a gas station in Hudson, Michigan. He bought an instant game lottery ticket and scratched off the bar code. The ticket said to see the clerk — and so he did. As Mark and the cashier were talking, the cashier scratched the rest of the ticket and then looked at Mark with a shocked look on his face and said: ‘Mark, you just won $4 million!.”

So last month again Clark bought an instant game ticket — and again, he won. Again, it was $4 million. “I scratched the ticket off in the store with a coin my dad gave me about 10 years ago,” he said, according to a Michigan Lottery release. “We lost him about a year ago after some health struggles, and I can’t help but think maybe that lucky coin helped me win this.”

b. Another experience in winning and losing occurred during an argument between two people who were in love with one another. They decided to calm down and take a car ride and take things over in a more reasonable way. Yes, this second story involves a Roanoke woman who wins $177,777 on a “scratcher” ticket because of a fight with her boyfriend.  Read for details. This info came off of ABC local newscast.  Most argument don’t end so happily.

Part II:     3-2-1 Craps Segment.

Coach Fav explains how placing the 6 and 8 from the Don’t Pass Line has given him 7 straight wins since returning to the craps tables since they have opened in June.  His 3-2-1 Craps strategy for pass line players who are low rollers has surpasses 170,000 views on YouTube on Jeremy Elerick’s Color Up Channel.  Just type in 3-2-1-craps to find it.

Part III:    Themed Casinos or Not?

Janie and Coach Fav go into an extended conversation discussing the many “Themed Casinos” that they have enjoyed. Yet they agree that the themed casino format is ending.

Episode # 90 Everything Sparkles

Part 1  The Hyatt

Welcome to our 90th podcast on this June 25 afternoon.  Janie and Coach Fav discusses the experience of staying at the Hyatt Meadows, a hotel attached to the Meadows Casino by a 4th floor skybridge.  Hyatt looks to iconic medical organizations to keep their hotel free of Covid 19.  “Everything Sparkles,” says Janie.  The hotel had to make other changes due to the threat of Covid 19 contagion, but all the changes seemed reasonable and made one feel safe.

Part 2 The Meadows Casino

Janie also explains that the Meadows insists that all patrons wear masks as does many of their employees.  The ones that do not wear masks but rather wear full face shields. Janie points out that hearing impaired individuals cannot read lips through a mask; however, they can read through a face shield.  This is something that I never thought about.  Janie points to many safety regulations in place and that she felt safe playing there.

Part 3  Winning and Losing

Coach Fav enjoyed seeing a young man win $10,000 on a LINKS slot machine.  That positive experience was being at a craps table near a rather sore loser who went through about $4,000 in less than 90 minutes.

Part 4  3-2-1 Craps Segment

Coach Fav explains one of his usual approaches to craps that he enjoys and is one that low rollers can enjoy and appreciate.

Episode # 87 Who Do You Trust?

Commentary: In this age of misinformation, exactly who do you trust. I have read that the opening of the country is premature. I have also read that Stanford University medical doctors explain that staying closed is exactly what we should not be doing.  In doing so, we are only setting ourselves up for a severe resurgence in the fall.  Open up now and an immunity will develop in the population protecting us against a severe resurgence in the fall of the year.  So who do you trust?

3 Callers respond to this question: Would you go to Vegas on May 15 if your flight and room were comped by the casino?

New Nevada Casino Regulations

Tables Games limited to three gamblers at a time, Roulette to 4 players at a time, an 6 players to a Craps Table. Well, if craps tables are putting a stickman, a bowman, and two dealers at a table, and only 6 gamblers at a time are permitted to play, then I fear that table limits will be at the $25 minimum.  How else would a table of three be profitable for a casino if they are staffing the table with four employees.  Will casinos offer tub tables staffed with one or maybe two dealers for low rollers or will bubble craps machines and the like now be the refuge for lower limit craps players?  Who do you trust?

I used to ask that question when I read or viewed get rich gambling strategies that guaranteed success. I asked that question because I immediacy did not trust what videos were saying or what gambling authors were writing. Now I am asking the question Who Do You Trust with the daily newscasts and the daily newspapers.  The age of certainty seems to have evaporated. Scientist disagree, doctors disagree, differing economic forecasts can be found on either side. And asking the questions about casinos in general or Las Vegas specifically – What will the casinos be like when they reopen it’s the same. Who do you trust with the truth? Increasingly, I have concluded that I can trust no one.  We have to open and find out. Governors change their mind everyday and then spin it. I expect that state gaming regulations across the country will change the same way.  Who Do You Trust, I ask. My answer is no one. Because no one knows what will come. Let’s see how things are upon openings in all areas and let’s anticipate that changes to openings will occur quickly and in some cases almost immediately.

Janie on Keys to Evaluating the NFL Draft

1.  Did your team the best players available when it was their turn to choose?

2. Did your team’s pick help improve an area of weakness that is obvious. For example, picking the best lineman available because the area of need was a lineman.

3. If your team did this consistently throughout the draft, they deserve a high grade.

These teams are my A’s

The Bengals and The Ravens. I would give the Steelers a B plus. I love their first pick of Chase Claypool. So think it over and evaluate your own team. Were you shocked as I was about how many times the mock draft of Mel Kifer did not work, over 20 times Mel missed. So this shows that even an expert does not always get things right.  I hope your team did get it right.

Craps Talk: Laying odds on the Don’t Pass line explained by Coach Fav. Also in this session Coach Fav reviews the Power Pressing Charts of Color-up Club by Jeremy Elerick.

Show Notes:

Part 1: Wynn  Resorts lays out reopening strategy using Thermal cameras, worker and customer masks among tools to be used. Wynn Resorts Ltd. CEO, Matt Maddox, hopes to see the Strip “slowly begin” to reopen in the next month, according to an updated health and sanitation plan published Sunday morning. Once that happens, Wynn’s Las Vegas resorts will look much different under new guidelines, with the use of thermal cameras to steer away people with high temperatures, altered layouts to ensure social distancing and masks worn by all employees.  “Nevada will likely be one of the hardest-hit states in the nation and suffer very high unemployment,” CEO Matt Maddox said in the statement. “It is imperative to flatten this curve so we can re-emerge in a safe, sustainable way.”

Part 2: Online casino table and slot play not as much fun as being inside of a real casino.  Online gambling right now is all that the casinos and the gamblers have.  10 cent video poker? Why not.

Part 3: The most romantic Las Vegas love story that you will ever hear.

Part 4: Craps Segment: Coach Fav’s transition to the Don’t Pass Line and Hybrid Play all began when a casino raised the table limits from $5 to $15. He explains how it happened.

Show Notes: Stay Safe and Strong against the pandemic that we are facing head on. When we do get the all clear, here are some important principles to embrace that may maximize your casino enjoyment: Don’t play with scared money, Don’t use your government relief money to gamble, Be responsible, Resorts offer more than just gambling. Quit when you are ahead, Celebrate when you win, and when you lose, don’t be a sore loser

Trip report from a Blackjack player from Pittsburgh (Josh)  who was visiting in Vegas with his wife the last weekend before the state of Nevada ordered all casinos to shutdown. This is a powerful, intense, and interesting phone call.

In a shortened Craps Talk segment, Coach Fav admits that he makes a hop bet on the come-out roll when he is shooting by placing $2 on the hard ten hopping. Remember that “Hop the Hard 10” is a one roll bet, but it pays 30 to 1. A $2.00 bet wins $60. It’s a fun bet that doesn’t do much damage, but it pays enough to be enjoyable. I hit it back to back on Veterans Day 2019 at the Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

Finally, Coach Fav recalls that his father was born during the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1917 and 1918. So America has faced demon pandemic before.  America always comes back. So until we meet again, thanks for listening and stay safe everyone. April 9, 2020

Episode # 84 After It’s Gone

Episode # 84 is based on suppositions made by several callers to Casinos USA and Coach Fav and Janie regarding how Las Vegas Casino Resorts might be like once the terrible Coronavirus has gone and they reopen to the public.

Also reviewed in a more factual manner is the steps the Nevada gaming companies have taken with protecting their own employees and the credits that their own customers have accumulated in rewards programs. Also noted is the food that the casinos gave to the Las Vegas food banks and other charities.

Show Notes: Corona Virus may hurt the tax revenues for states where casino gambling is legalized and taxed. In Pennsylvania the casino business is booming as there was a 4.5% increase in revenues despite a small drop in slot machine play. PA taxes the slot revenues at an amazingly high 54% and now count on this money, which is not always certain.Until the Corona virus, experts were expecting another increase in 2020 as sports betting by app and in sports books continues to attract customers.  No one knows how the virus will ultimately affect casino profits.

A Florida gambler has been charged with making threats against professional gamblers on social media. State laws are catching up with regulating social media comments so beware. This man faces the possibility of a 5 year jail sentence.

In our popular “3-2-1 Craps” segment, Coach Fav finds another set of  YouTube Craps Videos that he deems worthwhile. Check out the “CRAPS HAWAII” videos for honesty and interesting pressing strategies on place bets.

Just a reminder, if dice hit the back wall of a craps table as required by the rules, the results will be random. Take that to the bank. So hit the wall babydoll.  A slow motion camera shows how hitting the wall on a craps toss makes a dice throw random. That’s proof.  Still, players often win despite this and overcome the house edge built into the game because anything can happen in the short term.

In the final segment, Janie and Coach Fav talk early March Madness and pick the National Champions and give advice on tournament early bets that should win. Finally, Janie highlights an upcoming trip to the Meadows in March and Rocky Gap in April and invites listeners to join us for some craps. At the Belterra a few weeks ago, Coach Fav’s podcast  listeners hit the “Make Them All” bet three times in two days of play. Nice!

Show Notes:  We once again explore the charm of the Southern Indiana Riverboats, Hollywood Lawrenceburg, Rising Star in Rising Sun, and the Belterra in Florence, Indiana. Yet we were shocked to learn that the state of Indiana has changed its casino laws and now permits land based casinos.  All three resorts that we visited have a combination, some of the casino remains on the boat, some of the casino is now on land.  In fact, all three have new sports books in these resorts are land-based.  Perhaps the day of the  Riverboats, put in the river waters way back in 1993 will be coming to an end.

In “Craps Talk” Coach Fav highlights a new small craps table at the Belterra that is run by just two dealers. The table is for six players maximum. In this way the casino can keep a craps table open at those hours when it would not be sensible to put a crew on a larger table. This idea is a good one. Our “Meet-Up Listeners” made the “Make Them All” bet three times in two days of play in the small tub of a table.  Coach Fav did play on the larger tables later in the evening where he saw a player lose $5,000 in about 90 minutes. We learned via Messenger that one of our podcast listeners, Mike, won $5800 at the Belterra just a few days before we arrived. Mike was not with us the nights that we played. We missed him by a few days. Again, he messaged us regarding his good fortune.

In the third segment of the podcast, Janie and Coach Fav reveal how they feel as if they are in a John Cougar Mellencamp song when they are visiting the small rivers towns of Southern Indiana. “Here’s a little ditty about Jack and Diane, two American kids doing the best they can.” So much fun to be here. Give it a try for a total change of pace. Finally, in church Janie meets a friend who explains that she is giving up casinos for lent, with some safety nets.  She is staying until Midnight on Fat Tuesday and playing again on Easter Sunday. Count Janie and Coach Fav out on that giving up casinos thing.  How about you?

Thanks for listening.
